Refugee solidarity between exclusion and reception

Günter Burkhardt discusses the relationship between volunteering, professional advice and public responsibility.

Summary

In his 2014 BBE guest contribution, PRO ASYL co-founder Günter Burkhardt describes the possibilities and limits of private support for refugees. He contrasts growing willingness to help with political barriers to protection and reception.

Burkhardt calls for dignified housing, early access to language learning and employment, and qualified advice. Volunteers can build relationships and provide everyday support, while viable reception arrangements also require state action. He identifies cooperation between municipalities, schools, advice services and civil society as a basis for successful reception. The contribution addresses the situation and political debate of 2014.
